What better way is there to play a weekend’s chess than in a magnificent hotel venue such as the Queen's which is beside the seaside? Eighty-four players turned out to the first of a new series of hotel chess events organised by Tony and Barbara Corfe. Castle Chess advertised five sections and, although a couple were small, the pairings did work for all six rounds. The sun shone for much of the weekend, which allowed players to walk to the sea front or simply to read the newspaper in the grounds of the Queens Hotel, Southsea, Portsmouth.
Tony was pleased to welcome Laurie Walker back onto the scene of chess controlling after an absence of some 15 years. Laurie, in the eighties, was heavily involved with Junior chess, both within Hampshire and as part of the national picture for 5 years.
The Open (14 players) was won jointly by William McDougall (Chichester) and Ieuan Ward.(Salisbury) It was a keenly contested competition in the absence of any titled players.
The Premier (U175 – 9 players) was won by Andrew McDougall (Chichester).
The Major (U155 – 11 players) title was taken by David Elliott (Fareham).
The Minor (U125 – 23 players) produced a clear winner, Robert Treloar (Cosham). This was Robert’s first ever tournament title.
The Challengers (U100 – 27 players) was the largest section and was won by Cyril Winter (Crowthorne).
The leader of the Castle Chess Grand Prix is Cyril with 5.5 points.
The Prize Fund, based on 60 players, was increased by £205 due to the larger entry. A total of £955 was presented by Castle Chess.
